1890s Robe

These robes were inspired by a dressing gown from the 1890s in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. It was created in Japan for the Western export market and has aesthetic characteristics of both cultures (see the photo!). I set out to produce a Thread Circus version. Like all Thread Circus robes, it has my usual 100% cotton fabric sandwich (shell-fill-lining), but the shell is cotton sateen with it’s subtle sheen instead of the usual matte poplin. This style has a (new!) different silhouette from many of my styles. It has a slender A-line skirt instead of a semi-circular one, dramatically gathered sleeves, and a closure with gorgeous passementerie knots, MOP buttons, and a sash. As usual on any Thread Circus robe, you can expect deep pockets.

I would love to see this over a charmeuse pajama set, or worn as an evening coat over a slipdress.

Thread Circus robes may look precious, but they are utilitarian garments. They can stand up to frequent machine washing and drying.

Made in USA.
